250 taxi-moto operators in Kamonyi join youth volunteers’ organization

​About 250 commercial motorcycle operators in Kamonyi District have joined the Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP).

The new members, who subscribed to the youth organisation early this week, belong to COMATRACO and COSTAMOKA, the two cooperative of commercial motorcyclists in Kamonyi.

The youth organization is one of the vibrant community policing groups that raise community awareness and fight against crimes through promotion of community safety and enhancing the tradition of human security a tradition.

Thacien Kirezi, the coordinator of RYVCP in Kamonyi, said that the youth volunteers’ leadership in the district is actively involved in campaigns in schools and communities to raise awareness about some of the pressing security issues like drug abuse, gender based violence, human trafficking and child abuse.

“But we also use such opportunities to entice other youth to join the course to realize its big dream and vision. We now have 1214 members and the target is to have all the youth in Kamonyi to subscribe to the group,” said Kirezi.

Justus Kangwagye, the National Coordinator of RYVCPO, recently said that they target to increase their membership population to one million in the next one year.

The power and activities of the youth organization have attracted the attention of other public and private institutions that have tapped their power to realize their targets.

Recently, Rwanda National Police (RNP), Society for Family Health (SFH) Rwanda and RYVCPO signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding to strengthen awareness in security and hygiene.

The agreement binds RNP and SFH Rwanda to reinforce the activities of youth volunteers, who will spearhead behavioral change in communities towards sustainable security, health and hygiene.

​SFH Rwanda will, partly, avail its health and hygiene products and services to the youth including Interpersonal communication (IPC) sessions, promotional materials, to aid them in their awareness campaigns to ensure a crime free environment and healthy communities.
