The Ministry of infrastructure has donated eight vehicles worth over Rwf200 million to the Police traffic unit yesterday facilitate in the road safety awareness campaign.

The vehicles were received by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Stanley Nsabimana and were handed over by Dr. Alexis Nzahabwanimana, the State Minister in charge of Transport.

Nzahabwanimana said that the Ministry is committed to capacitating the Rwanda National Police traffic unit in terms of skills and equipment, to effectively accomplish its duties, especially in improving road traffic safety.

The vehicles, he noted, will ease the movement of traffic police officers and facilitate them to respond, timely, to public needs in terms of road safety.

He said plans are also underway to train both police officers and road users, especially drivers, on road safety.

“We have plans to purchase more road traffic equipment to further improve on road security in the country,” he said.

Nsabimana thanked the Ministry for their continued support, and added that the vehicles will boost the traffic unit in its activities.

Chief Supt Felix Rutagerura Bahizi, the traffic Commanding Officer, said the unit still needs more equipment.

He added that the vehicles will act as force multipliers in the deployment of traffic police officers and rapid response in case of an accident.

Rutagerura further urged the road users, especially drivers, to respect traffic rules and regulations, a thing he said will reduce on the rate of road accidents.
