Rwanda | Rusizi: ONATRACOM affirms technical and quality of the vessel

Rwanda’s public transport company ONATRACOM has affirmed that the boats introduced to Nkombo Island meant for human transport are technically ready to start operations.

This was announced on Monday , 05.03.2012 after the technical control service that was carried out by ONATRACOM  technicians to see if the boats qualify to carry out water transport activities in Lake Kivu..

Theodore Gakuba, head of ONATRACOM, said that with his control team, the required equipments for vessels meant to transport people are all installed and the vessel is ready to start operations.

“The vessel is well equipped with all necessary equipments and is now permitted to start working; it has all required seats, washrooms and lights.” Said Gakuba.

The vessel worth 200 million, with a capacity of 95 people and 40 tons of cargo, is a present from President Paul Kagame to the citizens of Nkombo Island located in Lake Kivu and will help the islanders to easily connect with other people.

Apart from helping the residents cross over to Rusizi, the boat is expected to boost Nkombo’s economy.

The boat was handed over to Nkombo residents on the 09/02/2012 by the Prime Minister Pierre Damien Habumuremyi.

Rusizi district officials said that an interview for all those interested in working in the vessel including the vessel pilots will be conducted on the 06th of this month and its routs will be ready to commence by the 15th march 2012.
