Ngoma: Lack of power at park irks travelers, Taxi operators

Commuter and taxi operators at Ngoma Taxi Park are groaning over lack of lighting at the park which halts their activities when darkness kicks in, a thing they say could even cause insecurity.

Taxi drivers that operate in this park say, they cannot work in the evening, something that is hampering their business.

“It is difficult to park here in the evening because no passenger would wait for a taxi in the dark. Business for us is becoming hard to run. It is like the park is just for decoration because it doesn’t benefit us at all,” grumbled one driver who preferred anonymity.

Passengers that spoke to us were called upon relevant authorities to do the needful and light the parking area.

“Though this parking facility lacks many things, the power issue is urgent because it is paralyzing business at the moment,” said one passenger who identified himself as Joseph.

When contacted, district authorities said that plans to have this issue solved were in place.

According to the district Engineer Fidel Kayigire, the cost to have electricity installed in the park has already been paid to the Water and Electricity body (EWSA).

“We are waiting for them to fulfill their obligation and they have promised that the work will be over in a two month’s period,” said Kayigire

The Ngoma district parking facility was partly handed over to the district in May, but there are many issues pending contractor’s intervention. It has since been disclosed that the park cost Rwf65 million, but Rwf2 million is yet to be paid.
