Gakenke: Passengers call for competition in transport business

Passengers plying the Kigali-Gakenke route of the Northern Province are demanding the end to the monopoly of transport business in the area, citing inefficiencies in providing services.

The passengers say that the area has one Transport Company which provides poor services like delay in setting-off and unnecessary stopovers along the way hence paralyzing their programmss.

Marie Charlotte Mukamwiza, a regular passenger says that these vehicles stop along the way putting in other passengers thus disrupting tour programms.”

“Due to this impediment, people are forced to use vehicles going to Musanze district to be able to keep time and that means that they have to pay the Kigali-Musanze ticket,” explains Mukamwiza

Boniface Nkurunziza another passenger who normally uses this transport agency says that another transport company in this area would be the only solution to this problem.

“I am sure their working methods would change the moment another player enters the market because competition leads to efficiency,” says Nkurunziza.

In a phone interview, the head of the lone transport company said that they are aware of the poor service in their business but had already held a meeting to look into the problem.

He explained that much of the problem is caused by the size of the vehicles they were using before.

He said they are planning to write  telephone numbers on their vehicles to enable people to report unethical drivers.
